Steve James has been making documentaries for more than three decades,

so he's used to people flagging him down when he's filming, hoping they'll get to appear on camera.

He often gracefully declines these offers, but he looked at his latest project, City So Real, differently.

He saw the five-part docu-series set in the world of local politics as a mosaic portrait of Chicago.

On this film, it was like, anytime anybody flagged us down, we were like, great.

James talks about how he circumvented then candidate Lori Lightfoot's press team to get access to Chicago's future mayor.

He also talks about going out into the street to shoot during the pandemic.
