I'm John B from gangreneation.com. On today's episode, we have our weekly mailbag. Each Wednesday we do a mailbag with listener questions. We will discuss the Jets focus on older players in free agency this off season and what it means. We'll also talk about what the best part of the Jets off season was. But we'll begin by talking about Gino Smith. Our first question is about the veteran quarterback. The Jets reacquired early in the offseason.

The question is, John, I think it will be pretty easy for Gino to give us better quarterback

play than Justin Fields and Brady Cook.

However, I really don't want to sit through another jet season where we are making excuses

for a below average quarterback.

What should our expectations be for him?

This is a question, the way it's phrased, that I think hits on a key point.

And I think one of the problems in recent Jets history is the bar is set so low.

And there's a tendency to say, well, Gino Smith's going to be better than Justin Fields and Brady Cook.

But that's not the goal.

I hear this over and over with the Jets. I mean, people talk about this offseason, and there were things to like about this offseason. We'll discuss those in a little bit. But people say the roster is improved. Well, it would be difficult to not improve the roster based on what we had last season, particularly at the end of the year,

when the injuries started piling up and the Jets were essentially putting a practice squad-level team on the fields near the end of the regular season. I mean, the Jets could have done nothing

and just had guys get healthy, and their roster would be better week one than it was week 18

in Buffalo last year. You can't set the bar that low.

And this happens over and over.

You know, when Joe Douglas took over for Mike McCagnan, people said, well, Douglas is better

than McCagden.

Well, again, it'd be tough to be worse than Mike McCagden.
