I'm John Bachelord with my colleague, Mary Kissel, executive vice-president, Stevenson

Cooperative, former senior adviser to the Secretary of State many years in Hong Kong,

observing the mainland China and the freedom that was possible in Hong Kong once upon a

time no longer.

Now the Biden administration is in negotiation with Beijing that has been revealed these

last months and years as a brutal regime, abusing its own people in its neighborhood

and making routine, predatory remarks towards Taiwan.

However, there is a puzzle, the Biden administration policy.

I'm not going to use the debating term decoupling.

I'm going to look at the facts.

The facts are that Gina Romando, the Secretary of Commerce, is in Beijing to negotiate following

Secretary Yellen of Treasury in Beijing to negotiate following Secretary Blinken of

the State Department in Beijing to negotiate as if Beijing is the authority on world trade

and on treating your neighbors with respect.

Mary, the message here is that we must go to Beijing to soothe, to calm, to negotiate,

to embrace, how to regard the Biden administration making all of these trips and still were left

with a regime that is unapologetic for its abuse of its own people and of Asia.

Well, I think what it signals, John, is that the White House has lost control over US

policy toward China and these various departments are pursuing their own ends.

Commerce is set up to facilitate commerce.
