this is CBS I in the world. I'm John Batchew with my colleague and friend Mary Kessel,

Executive Vice President Stevens Incorporated,

former senior advisor to the Secretary of State, and many years

for the Wall Street Journal editorial page in Hong Kong, now a crushed city by the People's

Republic of China, to comment on Taiwan and the election within hours

between the status quo, the DPP Party, the Guaman Dang, a party long associated with the mainland, and a third party.

We're looking at a race that is said to be favored by the DPP, but still the mainland is watching very carefully.

There have been reports of provocations, the usual balloons and flights by the

exclusive economic zone of Taiwan Taiwan threats from the mainland.

However, the vote is going forward now to we understand, to our understanding between

the Democratic Progressive Party,

the People's Party, which is an outsider

and Guamandong.

Mary, this is a demonstration of democracy

by a republic and a capitalist state we know very well.

I do not believe, however, we have an answer to the provocations out of the mainland.

Is the vote enough, a success for the the vote does that answer Beijing?

Well the vote demonstrates that the Chinese people and people of Chinese ethnicity

are perfectly capable of managing and running a fair and free election.

And it is the ultimate rebuttal to the CCP's core argument,

which is that the Chinese people on the mainland need the Communist Party
