Summary

"The Offspring" (March 12, 1990)

Yeah, we finally did an hourlong — and if you're surprised that we picked Star Trek: The Next Generation, then you are probably unaware how many fans of GEE are also huge Star Trek nerds. We're joined by friend Mike Gizienski, who knows more about the Star Trek franchise than we do, to discuss the episode with Data's daughter Lal, which isn't especially any of the letters in LBGTQ but manages to tread into each of their territories. Trust us, it's a great episode of TV even if you don't know the difference between an Andorian and a J'naii.

Hello and welcome to a gayest episode ever, the podcast of which we discussed the LGBTQ episodes of classic sitcoms and sometimes things that are not sitcoms at all.

0:28.4

I'm Drew Mackey.

0:29.2

I'm Glenn Lakin.

0:30.0

Glenn, what not sitcom are we discussing today?

0:33.1

Star Trek, the next generation, so all the nerds can stop yelling at us.

0:37.8

That is correct.

0:38.8

This is the first and only exception we're making to our no hour longs rule. And I'll explain why we're doing it. But first, I want to welcome Mike Jizinski, our in studio guest who knows more about Star Trek than we do. Thank you for having me. Thank you for coming here and allowing us to cover our ass. And like also I didn't have to, like, download the entire of the Star Trek wiki before I did this. Like, you're my fail safe to be able to explain things that I don't know. Yeah, that's why I'm here. Which is a lot of things. Yeah. Yeah. Like, does Data have a penis? Yes, and it's fully functional. Oh, okay. I, I am glad that there's a definitive answer on this. Is there a Star Trek sex toy that is a replica of his penis? Probably not official Paramount merch. Sure. But I'm sure it exists. Yeah. Knowing the fan base, yes. Fun penis fact for Star Trek, though. Cleons have two. In the same spot? Yeah. So it looks like a piece sign or what? Well, maybe. I don't know. It's never been seen, but. I want to see what people have, how people have depicted it. Like, it could be a two on top of each other. Yeah. Would that make more sense? I don't know. What does the clean on vagina look like is the follow-out question? Probably two also. Probably two in the similar. Maybe it changes and let's say you find out who you're supposed to be with by like how it lines up. Interesting. Mike is an artist and designer for location-based entertainment, which is live events, immersive entertainment, and theme parks, possibly some theme parks you have enjoyed. but he's here with us today to discuss a show

about space people. Mike, can you state for the record your relationship with the various

2:05.0

Star Trek programs? It's been with me my whole life, basically. I can't even remember the

2:10.0

first time I watched Star Trek. Did your parents watch Star Trek? Yes, my dad did, but I kind of

2:17.2

ran with it.

2:18.1

So it's like a family religion.

2:19.7

Sort of.

2:20.3

Yeah.

2:20.6

Yeah.

2:21.4

I wouldn't go that far, but yeah.

2:23.4

Why is it meaningful to you?

2:25.8

I think growing up queer, I was like aware I was different at a very young age.

2:31.5

And I think why Star Trek so appealing is that it kind of offers, you know, a universe,

2:38.6

obviously, where it's very diverse and differences are welcome.

2:41.3

But I think also, you know, I don't know if I'm on the spectrum or whatever.

2:45.7

I kind of understood at a young age that the world wasn't built for me.
