Summary

I just had lunch with someone who sold a billion-dollar company. What stuck with me wasn't the money, it was how seriously he took standards. Not just in his work but through his entire life.

This month I talk about what standards really mean, why they're just values in action, and how raising them creates clarity instead of chaos. This is about doing better work, even when things feel messy, and coming out stronger on the other side.

In this conversation you'll enjoy 3 BIG things:

  • How to set real standards instead of vague values

  • How to rebuild trust when customers check out

  • Why higher standards actually make decisions easier

Enjoy these 3 things plus many nuggets along the way.

My book Million Dollar Weekend breaks down how to start a business in simple steps you can do in one weekend.

I also send brutally honest emails about business and life. Join 350k people reading them at noahkagan.com.

Buenos deos, amigos. It is your boy, Playa, aka Rabbi Candler's, aka Noah Kagan, in the

Casa. Talking about standards today, standards. First episode last year was leadership and

0:17.9

leading, and now we're talking about standards. Two kind of interesting

0:21.8

updates around that for myself. Just got back from the Playa. I was in Playa to Carmen.

With my wife, he's got a big old belly, in her bariga, she got a baby in there. The magic

of pregnancy is, and how hard it is, is just unbelievable, y'all. Especially my boys out there.

Thank God we don't have to do it. Shout out to the women. And it was just a relaxing vacation. A lot of times, it's just you go on vacation and come home and we're like, ugh, and we came home on vacation depressed. We were just like, that was relaxing. And it's just good. I hope you guys have great vacations this year.

And the second thing is standards, but before I get into kind of standards, I had a really nice lunch today. I'm not going to go into details because I don't want to have lunch with people. They're like, are you going to talk about it? And I'm like, yes. But I had lunch with someone. I want to even say who he is then to make it more interesting. He just sold a company for over a billion, like a real billion, not like a Twitter post. And lives nearby. I've seen him around and we've finally got a chance to go for a walk and have some lunch today. And it was just awesome to meet someone in a different category. He's on tech. And he was like, I don't use AI at all.

1:45.5

And frankly, I don't really want to. And I was like, oh, that's so nice. That's so nice. Tell me more about that. And he's like, yeah, you know, it's just like, we're in a world of efficiency and productivity. And he's like, I'm in a world of connectivity instead of productivity. and I told him kind of a funny story.

You guys are going to tease me and I deserve it but last week I was like could I actually do multiplication

1:51.6

by hand anymore and I tried it double digit multiplication so like 25 times 14 and I was like

1:59.3

oh wow I have to look up how to do this. And, you know, there's a beauty of all of our technology, especially now even AI, where it literally removes your thinking, it removes your memory, and it does it for you. But on the other side of that, you lose some of your skills, and you can argue like, I don't need these skills. But I I really appreciated his approach where he's like I'm not trying to build the most productive children I'm

2:22.1

trying to build the best children the kindest children not the most productive as my measurement of a

2:27.9

parent and this was a refreshing conversation to have with someone who I've seen who I know his product

2:32.9

you've probably used this product and a lot of

2:37.5

what we talked about in terms of standards was just like family standards and family values and I'll share a few

2:43.3

them because I thought they were just so good I'm mostly just remembering it for myself but one of them was like

2:46.4

brag at home don't brag outside the home and what that that means is that, you know, it's very easy

2:52.2

to want to go brag and, oh, I did this and look at me and look at, look at me. And his parents were

2:56.7

very big that you can be humble, but come inside the house and we'll brag all together.

3:01.6

His parents actually rewarded outcome and praised outcome, not just praising the effort. And so, you know, it's kind of contrarian in a way. He's like, yeah, I'm so proud of how you did that test. The parents were very good and how you got an A. And what I've noticed from successful people, there is a lot who had parents that pushed them hard, but there was just parents that had standards. And somehow, maybe it's genetics, but the kids seem to push themselves so yeah one i love the

3:25.7

humility part about brag inside the house number two i love that his parents were like yeah we're
