It's winter 1961 in publisher Martin Goodman's office at Marvel Comics in New York City.

Stan Lee steps into the office and takes a seat.

Stan is riding high from the success of his and Jack Kirby's creation, the Fantastic Four.

With this new comic, Stan and Jack introduced a new type of superhero,

ones who face real-life problems and aren't always perfect.

After the Fantastic Four success, Martin Goodman tasked Stan with coming up with more superheroes

that would make him more money.

Now, after months of work, Stan has an idea for a character he thinks will be a huge hit.

Martin, I have something that I think could be really big.

So I was sitting at my typewriter and this fly buzzing around my office caught my attention.

I was fascinated by the way it could stick to the wall and climb up it.

And I thought, that's a power our next superhero should have.

You want a fly to be a superhero?

No, no, I want something more thrilling to that.

So I started to think about other things that can climb walls and it hit me.

Spider-man.

Stan, stop.
