Gardening podcast. Today we're talking about square foot gardening. It's a

really popular type of gardening. It was actually pioneered by an engineer Mel Bartholomew, who I actually worked with for a few years

quite a while ago, building out some of his stuff as far as his website. So I learned a lot. I learned a lot about square foot

gardening and this is way back when I was first getting into gardening. So it was

very new to me and and the square foot gardening method was exceptionally simple and easy to understand,

especially from a non-gardener's perspective.

So here is the basic idea behind it.

If you think about a garden bed, let's imagine a three foot by three foot bed,

that can be split up into nine different one foot by one foot squares.

And this is where the name comes from, square foot. one foot squares.

And this is where the name comes from,

square foot gardening.

So you think about planting plants within single square feet

and you think about your garden in terms of how many single square foot blocks it contains.

Now that's not the only thing that square foot gardening is all about.

They're really well known for their specific type of potting soil.

So the soil that they use is one-third vermiculite, which is a coarse-grade vermiculite to

add both aeration and water retention.

One third spagnum peat moss, so that would be to add water retention as well, and then one third

blended compost. And they recommend doing as many different types of compost as possible

just to mix that up and get as many different nutrients as you possibly can.
