Summary

Holy cow, you guys! I heard from so many of you after my recent show (5 Ways to Grow in Patience) and you were all about the fasting. I mentioned in that show that I believe fasting is a helpful way to work on becoming more patient, and many of you wanted to know more. To begin, I share voice feedback from listener Andrea who wanted to know some practical tips for making fasting more successful. I share some ideas along those lines at the start of the show: Stay busy Drink plenty of water Start small And then we move on to some ideas I want to share about what I believe are the main spiritual benefits of fasting: Fasting quiets your inner “self.” This is the main thing we are called to do as Christians—deny ourselves and focus on God and others. Fasting teaches us to not seek immediate gratification. You are not going to die because you feel hungry. Through fasting, you gain power over physical desires. We are meant to control our physical passions with the use of our reason, and fasting is a practice in exactly that. If you can master your hunger, you can master your anger, lust, pride, and so on. Fasting helps you grow in gratitude. It’s hard to be grateful for food when we are constantly eating it and never truly experience hunger. We don’t even really enjoy food when we are eating very frequently. Fasting teaches us to appreciate food, but also many other blessings and pleasures in our lives. When you fast, you can “offer it up.” When Jesus went into the desert to pray, he fasted too. Prayer and fasting go hand in hand. You can offer up your fasting for yourself, for your marriage, for a friend, for the Church, or for some special intention. It’s powerful! Through fasting, we gain strength to do hard things. The practice of fasting teaches us to accept suffering that comes our way and be patient in it, because we know it will not last forever. It’s a discipline that teaches us to trust in God for our strength. Fasting empties you and prepares you to receive God. When we empty ourselves out physically, we become prepared to receive God’s grace, strength, love, and presence. Physical hunger is a physical manifestation of a spiritual hunger and longing for God. fasting helps us to see this and practice being receptive to God in our “emptiness.” Are you fasting? Let me know how it’s going!

Hello and welcome to girlfriends. I'm Danielle Bean. I'm a wife and a mom, and I'm on a

living. This week, because you

0:22.5

asked for it, we're going to be talking about the spiritual benefits of fasting. Are you ready?

Here we go.

Hey, girlfriends. How are you? Thanks for being here. Thank you for showing up for another episode of the Girlfriends Podcast. I always love being able to connect with you here. And this week

0:46.8

is a little different because, not for you, for me, because I'm recording this on a Sunday

0:51.9

night. I generally record these on very early on Monday mornings,

0:56.2

and we record about a week out ahead of time. But this week, I'm available and free to do it on

1:03.9

Sunday evening because, get this, Dan is out of town. I know. He usually occupies my time on

1:10.2

Sunday evenings in a good way. We spend our time

1:12.2

together. But he's down in Florida visiting some of our big kids who go to school down there.

1:17.0

So this weekend has been very different for me. It's not often that Dan travels. His work usually

1:22.3

keeps him close to home. I'm usually the one who's away and he's the one holding down the fort.

1:26.7

So we kind of reversed roles this weekend. And though some things are harder, things are always harder

1:32.0

when you're the solo parent, right? But a lot was just kind of interesting and a nice

1:37.9

different mix of me with different kids spending time together, me making plans with people,

1:42.5

me getting major projects done that otherwise I

1:45.4

probably wouldn't have made the time for this weekend. And now look at me with a free Sunday

1:49.5

evening and I'm recording the podcast early. So I find it interesting when you can mix up the

1:54.1

dynamic like that because years ago when I used to be a stay-at-home mom and Dan was working
