Summary

Mallory’s 1985 house seems normal—until the land beneath it shows its teeth. A midnight tent sleepover is shattered by a disembodied girl inviting unseen playmates. Weeks later, a chain-latched basement door slams while the latch still swings, a padlocked attic somehow gapes wide, and her daughter’s blinds snap violently at dawn. Summer 2021 ups the ante: a lanky figure rockets past the garage, freshly ironed shorts duplicate themselves, and a vanished phone reappears—charging—in the center of a Bible Mallory has checked five times. Winter seals the deal when her car doors freeze shut from the inside, trapping her until a friend opens them effortlessly. The house may be new, but the restless ground underneath is ancient.
