We are joined today by Dr. Greg Hurtin, who is an emeritus professor of history at the University of California, and was a founding faculty member at the University of California at Merced.

He received a PhD in Modern American diplomatic history from Princeton University in 1974

and subsequently taught at Oberlin College, Yale University, and California Institute of Technology, Cal Tech.

From 1988 to 2003, Dr. Herkin was a senior historian and curator, as well as the chairman

of the Department of Space History at the Smithsonian Institution's

National Air and Space Museum here in Washington, D.C.

He is the author of now five books, The Winning Weapon, the atomic bomb in the Cold War,

councils of war, cardinal choices, presidential science advising from the atomic bomb to

SDI, the Brotherhood of a bomb, the tangled lives and

loyalties of Robert Oppenheimer, Ernest Lawrence, and Edward

Teller, which by the way was a finalist for the 2003 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in history.

And now he has written the Georgetown Set.
