Conversation with my colleague Bob Zimmerman about the revelations from the James Webb Space

Telescope, staring all the way back to the big bang, discovering galaxies that are too

complex, too developed, too completely discontinuous with our theory too early.

All of this does not yet have an explanation.

It is a joy, however, to contemplate that we've reached the edge of our understanding

of where we came from.

No longer is it enough to say 13.7 billion years ago suddenly.

Now we have to take into account that suddenly might include something before.

And this is not even the first, but Webb has now identified that scientists using Webb

have now identified another galaxy in the very early universe that simply should not

exist based on the theories of the big bang.

According to the big bang, the universe began 13.7 billion years ago.

This galaxy exists about 1.7 billion years after the big bang, about 12 billion years ago.

So therefore it has 1.7 billion years to form.

But yes, it has multiple generations of stars.

It also has a lot of molecules and elements that it should not have and could not create

in 1.7 billion years.

In fact, it's comparable to our own galaxy in these numbers.

And it took the Milky Way about 12 billion years to do this.
