Alicia Malone, what was your inspiration to write the female gaze?

Well, a couple of things.

I mean, the main thing was that after I wrote my first book called Backwards and in

Heels, which was about the history of women in Hollywood, I kept getting asked the same

question, which was, so how do we support women in film?

How do everyday people, audience members?

How do we send a message to Hollywood that we want to

see more women behind the scenes in front of the camera, behind the camera.

And so I decided to create a list, a simple guidebook to some of my favorite movies made

by women.

At first, I thought I was going to write about movies directed by women, movies written by women,

cinematography, costumes, production design, editing.
