Summary

The first manned spaceflight of Boeing’s Starliner capsule was scrubbed due to a defective valve. But looking at it on the pad, it’s hard to avoid getting a distinctly 20th Century vibe. The SpaceX Dragon capsule, meanwhile, looks like it’s from the future. So the question isn’t whether or not the Strainer will succeed; the question is whether or not it DESERVES to succeed.

Well, I'm sad to report that that old saw is true.

You should never meet your heroes because you discover they have feet of clay.

0:07.0

When I was growing up, NASA was one of my heroes and Boeing was too.

0:11.0

And now NASA and Boeing are working together and to be perfectly honest with you folks, I'm not impressed.

Hi everybody, I'm Bill Little here with Steve Green and Scott Ott.

internally. I certainly would not, for the slightest moment, wish any harm upon that crew

0:51.4

or anybody else involved with this mission at all. But having given

0:56.6

the serious thought, I don't want this to succeed. I don't think it's going to succeed. And even if it

1:01.5

does, I don't want it to. And the reason is because this combination of what NASA has become

and what Boeing has become is a combination of two agencies that were once

1:13.6

committed to excellence and for a long, long, long time have become standing armies of bureaucracies

1:20.6

that cut corners and got people killed. And I don't think they deserve to succeed, not just

1:26.3

from a moral point of view, but from a progress point of view.

1:29.2

Steve, let's start with you.

1:30.4

You can see here a split screen of the Boeing Starliner compared to the SpaceX Dragon capsule.

1:36.6

The Dragon capsule looks like it was made in the 21st century, and last time I checked, that's where we're living.

The Boeing Starliner looks like it was assembled from
