Summary

When we think of space exploration, it calls to mind Star Trek's lofty title sequence narration, "to explore new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations." But a growing number of academics see our yearning to explore as a lust for conquest. Even the terms "civilization" and "intelligent life" are fraught with imperialistic and colonial baggage — tied to eugenics and genocide — that we must disgorge before we set foot on other worlds. colonizing space, but they're talking about decolonizing space. Now, it starts off with a

0:46.2

paragraph that actually is a legitimate important question, and that's this. Quoting here,

What duty might humans have to life on other planets,

Those are all perfectly legitimate,

1:07.5

serious, scientific, and economic questions

1:10.2

they need to be answered.

1:12.3

But that's not what he's talking about.

1:15.7

So there's a guy, one of the guys who's quoted a lot in this is named Jacob Hakmissra.

1:22.9

I hope I get that right.

1:24.3

And he's put out a book called Sovereign Mars, transforming our values through

1:29.1

space settlement. I just said all of this just to get to some of the quotes that are in this

1:34.7

article. Oh dear. I really, I, yeah, all right.
