Now here's a highlight from coast-to-coast AM on IHeart Radio.

0:08.9

At what point did you go from being an Air Force pilot to being interested in space shuttle missions and NASA?

0:18.6

Well, I was always interested in being an astronaut as far back as I can

0:22.5

remember, which was fourth grade. And way back then, I remember reading an article in a science

0:29.5

magazine in school on the Gemini astronauts. And it didn't matter to me that they were all men. I

0:35.2

wanted to be one of them. I wanted to be an astronaut because they were,

0:39.8

to me, they were an extension of pilots

0:45.3

they were military pilots and they were test pilots.

0:48.7

And some of them were engineers.

Now prior to the space shuttle, there were no women astronauts, but in 1978, first class,

1:18.6

in the space shuttle program, NASA decided they were going to hire women as mission specialists.

1:24.6

Now in the shuttle program, the pilots eventually became commanders,

1:31.2

and then the mission specialists did the science experiments,

1:35.0

they did spacewalks, they operated the robot arm.

1:37.7

So NASA hired six women in that first class of 35 astronauts.

1:42.7

And they were great.

1:43.9

Those women, I got to know most of them. They became my role models.

1:50.0

And the years went by, but NASA never hired a woman to be a pilot because there just weren't any women
