Most of our media are owned by a handful of tech billionaires, but there's one place that still operates like the internet was never invented.

On the new season of the divided dial from On the Media, we're exploring shortwave radio, where prayer and propaganda coexist with news and conspiracy theories, and where an existential battle for the public airwaves is playing out right now.

Today we're going to dive into Meditation 21 of Book 4, which reads as follows.

1:04.1

If souls continue to exist, how does the air contain them from eternity?

1:10.0

But how does the earth contain the bodies of those who have

1:12.5

been buried from time so remote? For as here, the mutation of these bodies after a certain

1:35.2

and in this way make room for the fresh souls which come to dwell there.

1:39.9

And this is the answer which a man might give on the hypothesis of souls continuing to exist.

1:45.7

But we must not only think of the number of bodies which are thus buried,

1:49.5

but also of the number of animals which are daily eaten by us, and the other animals,

1:54.9

for what a number is consumed, and thus in a manner buried, in the bodies of those who feed on them.

2:00.6

And nevertheless, this earth receives them by, in the bodies of those who feed on them. And nevertheless, this

2:01.9

earth receives them by reason of the changes of these bodies into blood, and the transformations

2:07.4

into the aerial or the fiery element. I know what you're thinking? Tanner's an atheist. He's

2:13.4

going to hate this one. But you would be wrong. Those of us who don't believe in modern or ancient

2:18.6

concepts of God don't claim to know for sure that we know what happens after we die. Sure, we'll say

2:24.3

something like, and I have said this, you rot in the ground, that's it. But until we actually die,
