Episode 31 Sophie Sergie Part 1 of 2

In 1993, Sophie Sergie was found slain in a college dorm bathroom at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. Despite several witnesses who had heard the crime go down, and possibly even seen the suspect, the brutal murder of the visiting former student remained unsolved. The investigation was hampered by the overwhelming number of people with access to the scene, and the transience of the student body. When forensic genealogy was used decades later, it pointed to a man who was a student at the college at the time of the murder – and lived just one floor away in the very same dorm. And, he was alive and living in Maine. The trial of Steven A. Downs relied heavily on the DNA evidence left behind at the crime scene to connect him to the homicide 29 years earlier.

1:13.4	Monday, April 26th was a busy day of school for the 6,000 students at the University of Alaska's Fairbanks campus.
1:21.4	It was the last week of classes before final exams, which would wrap up the term and the school year.
1:27.3	Many students were pulling all-nighters,
1:29.1	hitting the library, and scrambling to get last-minute papers and assignments completed before
1:33.4	classes ended. The dorm buildings were a hive of activity at all hours, and Bartlett Hall,
1:39.0	one of the two largest dorms on campus, was no exception. That Monday afternoon, a female janitor named
1:46.0	Akcha and Cheetah entered the second floor women's restroom in Bartlett Hall, preparing to start
1:51.0	her regular cleaning of the bathroom. Her partner cleaned the toilets while she herself was assigned
1:56.2	to the showers and tub area. As she entered the shower room, she noted that the bathtub room door was closed.
2:03.4	This was a separate room off the shower room for anyone wanting to take a private bath.
2:08.3	It wasn't common for girls in the dorm hall to take a bath at nearly 3 p.m. and the door was
