It wasn't something Josh went looking for.

If anything, it was the opposite.

He had him planned to stop that day, and even when he did,

it was only because he had a few minutes to spare and nothing else pulling his attention.

The shop sat just off the main road, the kind of place you pass a dozen times without ever going in,

until one day you do. From the outside, it looked like every other place that dealt in old things.

Nothing was organized in a way that made sense at first glance, just a mix of furniture,

small items, and things that had clearly been sitting there longer than anyone intended.

The windows were crowded, the interior dimmer than it should have been for the middle of the day,

and for a second he considered driving past it and not thinking about it again. Instead, he pulled in.

Inside the air felt still in a way that didn't match the open door. It wasn't stale or unpleasant,

just unmoving, like the space held onto itself differently

than the outside did.

He didn't think much of it at the time.

Places like that tend to feel that way, especially when they're packed with things that have

been sitting untouched for years.

He moved through it slowly, not searching for anything in particular, just letting his

attention settle on whatever stood out as he passed it. Most of it didn't. Old chairs, worn shelves,
