There wasn't much to do where they lived once it got dark, and after a while, everyone

learned to stop expecting something new and

settle for anything that felt even slightly different. Most nights ended the same way, with a few of

them piling into a car and heading out without much of a plan, following roads they had already

driven a hundred times or turning onto ones they hadn't yet taken simply to break up the routine.

That was how they came across the farmhouse.

It wasn't a place anyone had been talking about, which made it more interesting than the usual

spots that came with stories attached. One of them had seen it during the day while taking a

backroad home and mentioned it later that night in passing, describing it as something that

might be worth checking out if they were bored enough.

They usually were. The first time they drove out there, they almost missed the turn entirely.

The lane leading to the property was narrow and easy to overlook, cutting between two overgrown

fields before disappearing into a darker stretch of trees, and by the time they noticed it,

they had already gone past it and had to double back.

When they turned in, the tires shifted under gravel,

and the sound seemed to carry farther than it should have in the quiet,

the headlights catching only fragments of the path ahead as they moved forward.

The house revealed itself gradually.
