Summary
As the Toledo Marathon looms just six days away, Dominic hits record for a rare solo jam session on grit, growth, and chasing what matters most.
From winging his first marathon off just two weeks of training to preparing for Toledo with modest mileage and plenty of gym sessions, he’s here to share the highs, doubts, and lessons running continues to teach him.
Along the way, he opens up about why the marathon holds such a special place in his story, how Garmin has leveled up his training with their newest watch, and what it’s like to squeeze in a trip to Meta’s HQ just days before race day.
More than splits or gear, this is about grit, growth, and finding meaning in the grind.
So whether you’re running your first 5K, gunning for a PR, or simply looking for a reminder that hard things are worth doing, this is a fresh take from the man behind The Running Effect.

| 0:28.5 | These conversations are always really fun to go back to in hindsight. |
| 0:32.5 | So I did my first ever official marathon in April, this past April, April 2025, and I ran the marathon with |
| 0:40.3 | a company called Goodies. For some context and background, I essentially took the entire winter |
| 0:45.2 | off, mainly just focused on the gym, as well as Midwest winters. If you live or grow up in |
| 0:51.9 | the Midwest, I'm sure you're familiar, are absolutely brutal. |
| 0:55.6 | And so I was kind of sick and tired of training through cold weather, was burnt out from the |
| 1:01.2 | sport of running, took six months off, really just focused on the gym, and then a company |
| 1:05.2 | goodies reached out, asked if I wanted to run the Knoxville Marathon. |
| 1:09.1 | I somewhat reluctantly said yes, knowing that I really |
| 1:12.7 | wasn't training for running. Train for two weeks, which was a 30 mile week, and then like, |
| 1:18.7 | I don't even know how many miles I ran going into race day, essentially no training whatsoever |
| 1:23.5 | and ran a 333 marathon off of two weeks of training, which the goal of the race was |
| 1:29.7 | literally to finish. I think there were doubts in my head at the time as to whether I would |
| 1:34.7 | even be able to finish the marathon. I've been running from the age of five. I ran really |
| 1:39.8 | competitively in high school and in middle school, cross-country and track and field. |
