Matthew 16: 13-19 - 'You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 424 (in 'The Good News: God has sent his son') - Moved by the grace of the Holy Spirit and drawn by the Father, we believe in Jesus and confess: 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'8 On the rock of this faith confessed by St. Peter, Christ built his Church.

- 881 (in 'The Episcopal Colleage and its head, the Pope') - The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock. "The office of binding and loosing which was given to Peter was also assigned to the college of apostles united to its head." This pastoral office of Peter and the other apostles belongs to the Church's very foundation and is continued by the bishops under the primacy of the Pope.

- 552-553 (in 'The Keys to the Kingdom') - Simon Peter holds the first place in the college of the Twelve; Jesus entrusted a unique mission to him. Through a revelation from the Father, Peter had confessed: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Our Lord then declared to him: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it." Christ, the "living Stone",thus assures his Church, built on Peter, of victory over the powers of death. Because of the faith he confessed Peter will remain the unshakable rock of the Church. His mission will be to keep this faith from every lapse and to strengthen his brothers in it. Jesus entrusted a specific authority to Peter: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."287 The "power of the keys" designates authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, confirmed this mandate after his Resurrection: "Feed my sheep."288 The power to "bind and loose" connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal judgments, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church. Jesus entrusted this authority to the Church through the ministry of the apostles289 and in particular through the ministry of Peter, the only one to whom he specifically entrusted the keys of the kingdom.

- 869 (in 'The Church is Apostolic') - The Church is apostolic. She is built on a lasting foundation: "the twelve apostles of the Lamb" (Rev 21:14). She is indestructible (cf. Mt 16:18). She is upheld infallibly in the truth: Christ governs her through Peter and the other apostles, who are present in their successors, the Pope and the college of bishops.

- 1444 (in 'Reconciliation with the Church') - In imparting to his apostles his own power to forgive sins the Lord also gives them the authority to reconcile sinners with the Church. This ecclesial dimension of their task is expressed most notably in Christ's solemn words to Simon Peter: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." "The office of binding and loosing which was given to Peter was also assigned to the college of the apostles united to its head."

Hey everyone. Welcome back to another episode of the Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast, where we do our best to really pull apart the scriptures verse by verse and do a proper

0:22.9

exegesis on the text to help you understand what the author was intending to teach.

0:27.8

So that's called doing an exegesis of the literal sense.

0:31.4

And in this podcast, every single day, that's what we do.

0:34.0

We look at the gospel reading from today's Mass, and we go through it verse by

0:38.2

verse to see if we can work out what's happening in the text. Today we have a really very well-known text,

0:44.6

and it's one that as Catholics you've probably heard many times, and you've probably heard

0:48.4

lots of really important interpretations of it. And as we go through, I think you'll see that

0:53.4

doing an exegesis as we do in this

0:55.5

podcast is actually really useful for a text like this because there's so many layers and every

1:00.9

word that Jesus uses here is actually layered with meaning. And I think you'll find this to be a really

1:05.8

rewarding study as we go through. So Matthew chapter 16 versus 13 to 19. When Jesus came to the region of

1:14.2

Caesarea Philippi, he put this question to his disciples. Who do people say the son of man is?

1:21.4

And they said, some say he's John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But you, he said,

1:30.8

who do you say that I am? Then Simon Peter spoke up, you are the Christ, he said, the son of the

1:38.6

living God. Jesus replied, Simon, son of Jonah, you are a happy man, because it was not flesh and blood

1:47.2

that revealed this to you, but my father in heaven. So I now say to you, you are Peter, and on this

1:55.5

rock, I will build my church, and the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it.

2:02.6

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

2:06.0

Whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth

2:11.0

shall be considered loosed in heaven.

2:13.8

So that's the text we want to look at today, and as you know, this is the text where as Catholics we believe Jesus makes Peter the first pope.
