Matt 8: 18-22 - 'The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'

- 2444 (in 'Love for the Poor') - "The Church's love for the poor . . . is a part of her constant tradition." This love is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes, of the poverty of Jesus, and of his concern for the poor. Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to "be able to give to those in need." It extends not only to material poverty but also to the many forms of cultural and religious poverty.

0:16.0	So today's reading that you would hear at Mass is Matthew chapter 8 verses 18 to 22.
0:23.5	So as always, we'll read the passage and then we'll try and do an exegesis of the literal sense.
0:30.2	What did it mean in its original context, which of course is where we always should start as Catholics.
0:36.2	So here's today's reading from Matthew
0:38.2	Chapter 8. When Jesus saw the great crowds all about him, he gave orders to leave for the
0:45.6	other side. One of the scribes then came up and said to him, Master, I will follow you wherever you
0:51.7	go. Jesus replied,
0:57.5	Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests,
1:00.8	but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head.
1:05.0	Another man, one of his disciples, said to him,
1:08.6	Sir, let me go and bury my father first.
1:14.3	But Jesus replied, follow me and leave the dead to bury their dead.
1:20.7	So that's our shorter reading today. It's an interesting one. As always, we want to start by thinking about the context. What's happened just before this? So Jesus has just begun to do various
1:25.5	healings in the Galilee region and he's starting to get
1:29.0	a large following.
1:30.8	Now he's currently in Copernum, which is their home base in Galilee.
1:34.8	And if you look at a map of the Holy Land, he's right on the sea of Galilee in Copernum
1:40.1	and it's on the north-western shore.
1:43.5	That's where Copernum is. Now, if you look at Luke's
1:46.8	version of this same story, Luke puts this story towards the end of Jesus' life, whereas Matthew
