Summary

Kris de Decker's balcony in Barcelona is nice and sunny. Which is just as well, because a website depends on it. This week we chat to Kris, co-founder of Low-Tech Magazine, about why he built a solar-powered website and how human history can inspire modern environmental solutions. We're also talking about foie gras, faux gras, and bringing EU and non-EU Europe together. You can check out the solar-powered version of Low-Tech Magazine's website here. This week's Isolation Inspiration: 'Today in Focus - The Wagatha Christie case'; 'Multiples: 12 stories in 18 languages by 61 authors'; this vegan foie gras recipe; Impact from Les Glorieuses, a feminist newsletter in English and French. Hello and welcome to the Europeans podcast with for the first time ever a married Katie Lee. How was it Katie?

0:30.8

Oh, it was lovely, thank you. I got married at Town Hall and then we had lunch on a boat that was flying the Ukrainian flag. It was very beautiful.

0:40.3

And now I'm looking forward to my honeymoon in Berlin next week, Dominic.

0:44.1

With me.

0:45.1

With you, my other husband. Yeah, it's not a very conventional honeymoon that I'm going with Dominic instead of my actual husband, as well as our producers, Katz and Vojek.

0:53.5

But that shouldn't let it get on

0:55.2

the way of being a beautiful and romantic trip. I really think you've misunderstood the concept,

0:59.9

but fine. I've never had one before. I'm happy you're straight back to work on the podcast with me.

1:05.8

Yeah, no rest for the wicked. Thank you for sharing her with me, Alex.

1:09.6

How are you, Dominic Kramer? Yeah, I'm fine. Nothing as

1:13.0

exciting as a wedding, but I did start rehearsal this week on a new production of an opera called

1:17.5

Freyschutz here in Amsterdam, and it's directed by this guy, Kirill Sera Brenikov, who you might

1:24.5

have heard about. He's this really interesting Russian film and theatre director who, yeah, I'm sure a lot of

1:29.1

people will have heard about him because he was in the news a lot the last few years because

1:32.1

he was put under house arrest in 2017 for apparent fraud charges, which were seen by most

1:39.1

people in my industry as simply being a way to keep him locked away because Putin and the Kremlin

1:44.0

didn't

1:44.8

like the work he was making, work that was critiquing authoritarianism and featured LGBT characters.

1:51.9

And yeah, in fact, he's been in the papers again just this week because the Bolshoi Theatre

1:56.1

in Moscow has cancelled his performances because he's been publicly critical of Russia invading Ukraine.

2:02.2

He managed to get out of Russia at the end of March. I think he's now living in Berlin,

2:06.5

but he's now in Amsterdam rehearsing with me and lots of other people. And yeah, it's really
