Summary

Moldova represents a prime example of social media giants' failure to tackle disinformation in smaller and less wealthy countries — in this case, with hugely dangerous potential consequences. This week we speak to civil society activist Diana Filimon about the propaganda war that Russia has been waging in countries neighbouring Ukraine. We're also talking about Germany's €9 transport experiment, the morality of a lockdown for cats, and scallop discothèques. You can find out more about Diana's work at Forum Apulum here and read Philip Oltermann's reporting on racism claims against Berlin ticket inspectors here. This week's Isolation Inspiration: The Truffle Hunters, and the New York Times' reporting on the legacy of Haiti's reparations to enslavers. You can read more about the methods used for the NYT's reporting here and more on reactions to the story here. A video of dancing scallops can be found here. Thanks for listening! The only thing bringing this continent together apart from the European tram driving at championships.

0:30.7

Oh, bold claim.

0:32.1

Which I got completely obsessed with this week.

0:34.4

Who knew that tram driving was competitive?

0:37.1

This is the video that you posted

0:38.2

on Twitter of a tram sort of pushing this big bouncy ball and knocking over some skittles. Is that

0:43.8

right? Yes, they play tram skittles and they do emergency break tests. And just like with

0:49.1

Eurovision, Australia somehow managed to weasel their way into this European competition.

0:55.3

How did they get an Australian tram over here? I have so many questions.

0:59.6

We'll just have to wait until next year comes around and then do a whole special mini-series

1:03.6

about the European tram driving championships.

1:06.1

Deal.

1:06.7

Have you been, Katie, since I saw you. We had a very nice few days together in Berlin, didn't we?

1:10.8

We had a lovely team meetup in Berlin, yeah. Dominic and I and our producers, Captain Vojek.

1:17.2

We stayed in the world's strictest Airbnb. There were rules about everything, including a 35-year-old fine if we left a single cup unwashed.

1:25.5

But I think that made it feel extra special when we got this

1:27.9

really nice glowing review from the hosts saying that we were exemplary guests. We really followed

1:32.7

those rules. We did. It's true. Although I did come back with COVID again. Well, I'm glad in a way

1:37.1

that you're trapped in the house because it means you have to podcast with me. What have we got coming

1:41.3

up this week, Dominic? Well, this week we're going to be talking about something that, frankly, I feel like we should be talking about more often, even if it can

1:47.9

sometimes feel pretty terrifying and impossible to solve. We're talking about disinformation
