This is Dr. Mike, coming to you from the campus of nationwide children's hospital.

We're calling this one Social Determinance of Health.

I want to welcome all of you to the program.

So we have an interesting and important topic for you this week as we explore the social determinants of health and how they impact a child health, development, and welfare.

And we will explore this topic with our pediatrics in plain language panel, which means right here out of the gate, I should probably explain what we mean by

social determinants of health in plain English. So here goes. As you know, lots of variables

in our social life intersect and impact our health. Things like

food and meals, housing, neighborhood safety, family income, quality of education. All of these things

have the potential to disrupt a child or teenagers' development, their health, and their wellness.

So we're going to explore the ways in which these social determinants impact health,

how they can result in disparities in health and wellness, disparities that really can last a lifetime.

And most important, how can communities and neighborhoods and schools and families and medical

homes a rally around kids in an effort to keep them healthy and watch them grow and meet their

full potential? So we're going to journey down that path as we consider the social determinants
