Summary

🎙️ Throwback Thursdays on Sober Awkward!

Every Thursday, we’re serving up a little slice of Sober Awkward history – a short, powerful clip from one of our most-loved past episodes.

Why? Because sometimes, the right words hit differently the second time around. Whether you’re new here or a long-time listener, these throwback moments are here to keep you company, remind you you’re not alone, and offer that little nudge of insight or encouragement just when you need it.

Think of it as a midweek check-in. Something bite-sized to walk with, laugh at, or quietly reflect on. And if the clip hits home? You can go back and listen to the full episode anytime – just follow the link in the show notes.

We know one episode a week isn’t always enough – so here’s your extra helping of honesty, humour, and a bit of awkwardness to get you through the week.

It might seem strange in a podcast about sobriety and drinking to focus a whole episode on food,

1:09.0

which is what we're talking about today, but it does actually play an important role both in our drinking years and in our sobriety. Over the course of today's episode, we hope to walk you through how alcohol affects our eating habits and our taste buds when we're drinking. We're always walking people through, aren't we? Yeah, walk them through, lead them. There is no walking going on in these pocketups.

I'm just really hot, I'm sitting in a really hot room, being sad.

1:31.2

Sweating, not moving.

1:32.3

It's the opposite of exercise. Yeah. We will cover some of the foods that you might want to be wary of in your sobriety. Haggis, for example. Not haggis, although you actually should be a little bit worried of that, no matter how far along in your sobriety you are.

1:44.0

I was more thinking the hidden alcohol in some foods.

1:47.4

Okay, fair enough. And we want to share with you the new role that food can play in your life once you've kicked the booze. Now, Vic, there is something I want to share with you. Oh, God, not herpes again, Hamish. No, no, no. You know how we like to include a bit of scientific research in the podcast? Oh, do we? That's a surprise, Amy.

2:03.4

We always do. Amish. No, no, no. You know how we like to include a bit of scientific research in the podcast?

2:52.1

Oh, do we? That's a surprise, Amish. We always do. Yeah, it adds a level of depth to each episode and makes us sound much more intelligent than we actually are. Yes, which we need. Well, never before have I enjoyed doing the research as much as I did writing this episode. I feel as if I found all of the answers to the questions I never thought that I needed answers to. I don't understand what you're saying. But it basically sounds like you've just been eating to research. Is that right? I didn't do any eating. Oh, okay. Well, that was surely would be the point. Google research. Oh, if I was doing food research, I would be eating various foods. No, I can't eat sugar at the moment. I can eat nothing fun at all. It's like me just eating dried oats. You're basically eating rabbit droppings on the day. Yeah, I wish I could eat. I wish I could. I don't know if they'd eaten fruit. They're bad. They're like blissfuls of the world of the earth. Before I reveal to you my research, I want you to take me back to the binge drinking

2:56.4

Vic years. I want to find out the role that food played in your life then, specifically

when you were drunk on a night out. What were you binge eating on?
