I'm Rory Stewart and I grew up wanting to be a hero and I'm still fascinated by the ideas of heroism.

In my new series, I'm taking in the long sweep of history from Achilles to Zelensky and asking, what is a hero?

0:16.0

Simply doing your job, being a decent human being.

A true hero is someone who just kind of shines by

their own light and that light is to be recognised by others. The long history of heroism with me,

Hello, I'm Greg Foote and welcome to Slice Bread, the BBC Radio 4 show that investigates the Wonder products promising to make you happier, healthier or greener.

Each episode, we follow the crumbs of evidence to find out if one of your suggested wonder products is indeed the best things since sliced bread or marketing BS. And today's suggestion comes from Derek Crossweight from the Whirl.

Hello Derek. Welcome to the studio. Hi, Greg. What wonder product would you like us to investigate

1:03.0

today, then? Smart doorbells. I've been thinking about getting one are the pros and cons of them.

1:07.9

Doorbells with cameras, essentially, aren't they? Yeah. What would you use it for? My wife's got

disability. Quite often if the doorbell goes, it'd be handy for it to be able to say to the delivery driver or just leave it on the doorstep, and then that gives her a few minutes to get to the door. And if you're away from home, it'd be handy to see whether or not any parcels have been delivered or who's knocking at your door, that kind of thing.

1:09.2

And what do you want to know about them specifically?

1:11.7

The legality of whether or not any parcels have been delivered or who's knocking at your door, that kind of thing. And what do you want to know about them specifically? The legality of whether or not you can record people, how far from your door can it be or not be? So it's just to see what the law was surrounding that. Well, this topic has certainly been ringing a bell with lots of listeners. That's an early pun for you there, Derek. Lots of emails sent into Slice.bred at BBC.com.uk to ask about these. Here is one from Alison, who says she is from a, quote, digitally privileged home counties town. She writes, we have had a ring doorbell for years. Initially, it was sliced bread. Now it is useless. I've upgraded my Wi-Fi, charged the batteries and upgraded the contract type.

We still don't get notifications of the door ringing and recording is erratic.

2:08.1

My favourite instance was when my friend rang the doorbell and my app notification went off

19 hours later.

2:14.5

Should I try a different brand or go back to a plain wired bell? We've also heard from

2:19.2

Trisha who asked, what happens if someone steals it from your door? Is that something that

would concern you? Hey, what do, yes. Well, we've got two experts who are both joining us remotely

2:27.2

today to talk about the features and price ranges of these products, principal researcher and

writer at which, Andrew Lachlan. Hi, Andrew. Hello.
