First this week in the 1950s the chemist Karl Gerassi changed the course of

history many argue when he found a way to make human sex hormones including

estrogens and progesterones.

These were subsequently turned into contraceptives, earning Gerasi the accolade of being the

father of the pill, which has since been taken of course, by millions of women worldwide.

And there, contraception has largely remained ever since, as chiefly a female preserve.
