In the summer of 1793, when Philadelphia was the largest city in the United States, as well as the temporary home of the new nation's capital, it was struck with the hottest weather it had experienced in years.

To add to this discomfort, humidity bore down and wrapped around the city,

Philadelphia proved the perfect breeding ground

Yellow Fever had reached Philadelphia, and it would go on to become an unprecedented devastating epidemic.

The afflicted would first come down with a splitting headache before turning a repulsive shade of yellow.

But that was before the real horrors began.

The victim would then begin to bleed from their nose and gums and

vomit up black blood frequently. Some they say even had blood oozing from

non-stop, almost demonic sounding hiccups. But as if that weren't enough, they also entered a delirium, seemingly losing their minds as they screamed
