Summary

Welcome to Slate Money Goes to the Movies, a miniseries in which Felix Salmon, Emily Peck, and a different guest each week discuss popular business-themed movies.

Dodai Stewart of The New York Times joins Emily and Felix to discuss the stunning winner of the 2020 Best Picture Oscar, Parasite. They discuss class solidarity (or lack thereof), how the film’s themes translate to America, and why only the rich can afford luxuries like planning, trust and using all their senses.

Hello, welcome to the parasite episode of Slate Money Goes to the Movies.

0:19.8

I am Felix Samuel of Axios.

0:21.8

I'm here with Emily Peck of Fundrise.

0:25.1

Hello.

0:26.2

And we are going to talk about what I think is safe to say,

0:31.0

the best movie, not only of this season, but of both seasons so far.

0:36.4

This is an absolute masterpiece of a movie by Bong Joon Ho. Parasite, if you haven't seen it, don't listen to this podcast. Just go off and see it. That's the most important thing. And then once you've seen it, you can listen to, well, you can listen to a little bit of me and Emily talking about this, but the main person you want to listen to to talk about this movie is

Times. I'm your former co-worker, a lifelong

1:14.4

New Yorker. Yes. And I'm a former screenwriting major and a movie enthusiast. Any movie that you chose,

1:24.5

it would have been amazing just for the presence of Dodai Stewart.

1:28.2

But I have to say, this is the confluence of two absolutely perfect things.

1:35.1

Dodi's Dewart and Parasite coming together on Slate Money goes to the movies.

1:42.0

Okay, so Dodi, this movie came out in 2019.

1:47.0

Did you see it in the theater when it came out?

1:49.3

Certainly did.

1:50.1

Yes, absolutely.

1:51.7

And did you leave the theater thinking, wow, that was something?

1:56.4

Absolutely.

1:57.4

I left the theater thinking that I actually had some hype around it and I wasn't even prepared for like how actually good it was. I thought it was even better than it had been hyped to me.

2:12.7

I kind of completely agree with you on this one. I felt that when I came out of the movie theater in 2019 and then rewatching it for this show, I was like, you know what? It's probably even better than that. It's kind of even better like on repeat viewing.
