medieval nobleman with historian Sophie Ambler. Sophie's recent book, The Song of Simon

Demontfort, explores how the crusading 13th century Earl led England's

First Revolution. Our section editor, John Borkham, spoke to Sophie at our History Weekend

event in Chester this October to find out more. So Sophie, many Britons are probably familiar

with the name Simon Demontfort, but don't necessarily know

much about him and what it was he actually did. To begin, I just wondered whether we could go back

to the very start of the story. What is Simon's family background? Where is he born? So Simon

De Montfort was from a noble family who had their lands just outside of Paris.

He was born in the early 1200s into a family that was to become very famous in the early 13th

century because his father, Simon the Elder, was leader of the Aborigincian Crusade.
