Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, explains why the redefinition of marriage is such a serious matter. In the considered opinions of such great western philosophers as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, marriage was seen as a relationship between men and women. Indeed, in the Judeo-Christian tradition marriage has always been rooted in the dual, gender-distinct nature of humanity. As such, intercourse consummates marriage as a multifaceted mystery in which two people are forged together as one flesh. In mysterious union, a man and a woman procreate children fashioned in the image and likeness of their Creator. Marriage, however, is even more profound than procreation and paradisiacal pleasure—it is a mysterious parable of Christ and His church. The union of two people a poignant portrait of the unity of Christ and His bride. The parable has its roots in Genesis and bears ultimate fruit in Revelation. There are essentially three building blocks of civil society—marriage, church, government—resting atop the foundation of human life. Of the three none is more significant than marriage. The ABC’S—Anthropology: women and men enjoy strategic complementarity; as such, both are essential in the rearing of children. Biology: sexual reproduction requires male and female. Civics: Redefining marriage opens Pandora’s Box and spells the death knell to civil society.

0:26.7	why the redefinition of marriage is such a transcendently serious matter. I think the first thing
0:35.8	that comes to mind is, is great Western philosophers like Socrates,
0:43.3	Plato and Aristotle, who uniformly believed that marriage was to be a relationship between men and women. In fact, in my tradition, in the
1:00.5	Judeo-Christian tradition, marriage is rooted in something. It's rooted in the dual, gender,
1:10.0	distinct nature of our humanity.
1:14.3	And as such, well, intercourse is seen to consummate marriage as a multifaceted mystery,
1:25.9	a mystery in which two people are forged together as one flesh.
1:35.3	In this mysterious union, a man and a woman, therefore, procreate children who are fashioned in the image and the likeness of their creator.
1:48.5	But sexual union is even more profound than that. Marriage, well, marriage is a mysterious
1:59.0	parable of Christ in his church.
2:02.7	It's a poignant portrait, a portrait of the unity of Christ and his bride.
2:09.2	And this is not about cherry-picking verses from the Bible to make a case.
2:14.7	Why? Because the parable has its roots in Genesis and then bears ultimate fruit in the
2:22.4	book of Revelation. In other words, it encompasses the entire panoply of Scripture. It's the
2:30.3	congruent construct of the Bible as a whole. Human history rooted, rooted in the union of Adam and
2:39.6	Eve and then yielding its fruit in the wedding supper of the Lamb, in the full complement of God's
2:46.9	people prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
2:52.8	It's a divine metan narrative, a metam narrative that transcends our individual marriage narratives.
