Hi there from CNN. I'm Charlie Driver with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, September 30th.

A potential government shutdown is now just hours away. The bitter stalemate between Republicans

and Democrats is largely centered on funding for enhanced Obamacare subsidies. And it looks likely

to lead to the first government funding lapse of President Donald Trump's second term.

Ahead of the midnight deadline, the Senate is scheduled to vote at least once more on a GOP funding plan,

which would keep the government open through November.

It's a move to put pressure on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer,

who so far has blocked a plan for a funding bill which doesn't include the health care subsidies.

Schumer said yesterday that avoiding a shutdown is in the president's hands.

While Republicans hope Schumer and the Democrats will eventually cave,

CNN's Arlette-Signs has more on what a shutdown would mean.

There's tens of thousands of federal employees who would be furloughed, many more who would be working without pay.
