Summary

Ravi and Idrees Kahloon start with the current Supreme Court showdown: can a president raise tariffs alone, or does Congress have to sign off? They unpack why the Court might push back—and what that could mean for future presidents. Then they turn to immigration, where the U.S. may soon have more people leaving than arriving, with big effects on jobs and Social Security. Finally, they dig into education: why test scores are falling even as grades rise, and how places like Mississippi and New Orleans are turning things around by raising standards and focusing on real learning. – The Inconvenient Success of New Orleans Schools (The 74, 8/25/25) The Court Must Decide If the Constitution Means What It Says  (The Atlantic, 11/5/25) America’s Impending Population Collapse (The Atlantic, 10/29/25)America Is Sliding Toward Illiteracy (The Atlantic, 10/14/25) – Leave us a voicemail with your thoughts on the show! 201-305-0084 Follow Ravi at @RaviMGupta Notes from this episode are also available on Substack: https://thelostdebate.substack.com/ Read more from Ravi on Substack: https://realravigupta.substack.com  Follow The Branch at @thebranchmedia Listen to more episodes of Lost Debate on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lost-debate/id1591300785 Listen to more episodes of Lost Debate on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7xR9pch9DrQDiZfGB5oF0F Listen to Where the Schools Went: https://thebranchmedia.org/show/where-the-schools-went/

Welcome to The Lost Debata Show for Politically Ecclectics. I'm Robbie Gupta. And today I have on Idris Calhoun, who comes from maybe my favorite publication, The Economist, and moved towards one of my other favorite publications, The Atlantic. And I'm glad because the economists, you don't get your name on the byline. So I'm sure I've read so many of his articles.

0:21.4

I could already tell if I'm talking to him I have

0:23.7

because we share a very similar worldview

0:27.6

and certainly interest in certain stories.

0:29.8

And I'm glad he's at The Atlantic

0:31.9

because he has been writing about such important topics

0:34.4

that we talk a lot about on the show.

0:35.8

But there's a difference, there's just different levels of people and journalists that we talk a lot about on the show. But, you know, there's a difference,

0:38.0

you know, there's just different levels of people and journalists that you talk to. And there

0:41.9

are certain people who macro bullshit. And then there are certain people who you could just tell,

0:47.0

like, are just living the details of his story and also have really good instincts. And he definitely

0:53.0

strikes me as one of those guys. He's new to the

0:54.5

Atlantic. And so, you know, we always have tons of tons of the Atlantic people on here. And, you know,

1:00.1

he's definitely somebody I'm going to want to have back on. And we talk about three issues. We talk

1:04.2

about the Supreme Court tariff case that was argued today and what the implications could be. And what I

1:10.6

really like about that one is we kind of get into both like the inner workings of the Supreme Court and we renew your sort of knowledge of the major questions doctrine and stuff that we talked about a few years ago.

1:20.0

But then we really come out and say like, what is the meaning of all this?

1:23.1

And it's not what you think. This is not just another like I hate Trump tirade.

1:26.9

This is like actually this is meaningful in I hate Trump tirade. This is like, actually,

1:28.5

this is meaningful in certain ways that you might not realize, and then not as meaningful in other

1:33.7

ways. So you'll learn a lot on that one. And then we talk about immigration. And he had a bangor

1:39.8

of a piece about how we're trending towards or perhaps already at net zero or negative immigration
