Hello and welcome to the political party and a political party first, my first ever comedian guest

and what a cork really is, Al Murray, also known by his alias, Al Murray, the pub landlord.

He is a phenomenal guest as you would imagine.

Those of you that have seen him live or seen any of his stuff know that he's a very funny man and really minds great comedy.

A lot of it out of Britishness and Englishness and that's something we talk about.

He's new TV show which explores those themes but also of course highly relevant in Brexit Britain and what for nominal force that he had to create that character 20 or 30 years ago.

Now he's very much at the forefront really of the sorts of politics that we're all living with.

We talk about that, his historical knowledge is exceptional. His political insight is great.

Always get the sense of what's about. There's a million things that he could say on any of the subjects and I think that really comes across.

And despite that he wears it very lightly. He's kind of well you'll see when we talk about it.

I think I get the sense that he doubts his own, not his own political views but well I don't want to ruin the phrase that he used but it's a really good phrase about his own politics and where he stands.

And why? We get into all sorts of debates about free speech, about the empire, about history, about so many things that are relevant today.

Even if he wasn't a comedian he would have risen to the top of something and it would have been history or politics and he would have been on this podcast anyway.

But it is a treat to see him away from the landlord and to really pick his brain. He's a great intellectual and a really funny bloke.

I mean I was put the question to you out. Do you count as a political comedian do you think?

Oh that's a very good question. I don't think so. It's part of the stuff I do.

The thing is I'm always torn between the idea that I'm just an entertainment. I'm an entertainment species of entertainment.
