Summary

What is lifestyle economics and why does it matter?

The IEA's Christopher Snowdon is a fun-loving political thinker and explains his opposition to puritanism, why we should have more freedom and what that would mean for our policies on smoking, alcohol, gambling and the very existence of the NHS.

Hello and welcome to the political party. Today's guest is Christopher Snowden,

0:15.3

head of Lifestyle Economics at the Institute for Economic Affairs. It's been a while since I've spoken to a libertarian on the show, and Christopher's one of the best people that I follow on social media, and he's just really provocative in the right way. What I mean is, I guess, he's stimulating, is that whenever he posts something, and that's quite interesting, whether I agree with it or not, it's always one of those things that checks your thinking. So he's a really good person to follow us. If you're on X, he's at C.J. Snowdon, but I'll put a link. It'll all be in

0:44.3

the blurb where you can follow him and listen to his stuff. And he recommends a book in here that

0:48.8

I'm going to buy and read. Because I just think it's always good to just check your thinking.

0:52.4

And he's coming from a really interesting place about the rights of the individual. And what the limits of that are. So we talk about things like gambling and drugs in this. It's really fascinating. And he's a really funny guy. And he's a fun-loving person, which I think if your politics is coming from that position, that you should be able to kind of do things that cause no harm that you enjoy,

1:13.4

then I think that's really interesting as a philosophical starting point.

1:16.8

And yeah, he's a great talker and this flies by.

1:20.1

The political party returns to the stage on Monday, the 9th of March, with Zach Pallanski,

1:25.0

the leader of the Green Party.

1:26.9

Fascinating time to be talking to him,

1:28.3

obviously. On the 30th of March, my guest is Lisa Nandi, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media,

1:33.3

and Sport. And then on the 20th of April, my guest is the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood.

1:37.7

Tickets for all those shows can go to matfor.com or just click on the link that's in the blurb.

1:42.4

And I've added lots of dates

1:45.5

to my already, the longest tour I've ever done. I've added an extra 13 date. So I'm going, I'm going back to the Solford-Lowary because the first date has sold out. So I've added a second date now on the 23rd of May. Then on the 3rd of June, I'm going to Portsmouth. And then on the 12th of June I'm going back to Norwich

2:01.6

because that one was sold out.

2:02.9

On the 14th I'm going to Portsmouth. And then on the 12th of June, I'm going back to Norwich, because that one was sold out.

2:02.9

On the 14th, I'm going to York the Crescent. Brilliant venue. On the 15th, I'm going back to the lead city varieties, because that first day it has sold out. On the 16th, I'm going to the Glasgow Glee Club. On the 18th, Aberdeen Lemon Tree. on the 26th, I'm going to Bristol, the 1532 venue, and then in July, I'm going to Basingstoke. On the 8th of July, I'm going back to the Birmingham Glee Club. On the 10th of July, I'm going to the Bedford Quarry, and on the 16th, I'm going back to Maidenhead Norden Farm. So I'm going back to some places that have sold out, and I've added some extra places that weren't initially included.

2:35.2

So anyway, that is enough self-promotion.

2:38.1

Let's spend a joyful hour in the company of Christopher Snowden.

2:48.8

Chris, you're head of Lifestyle economics at the IEA.

2:52.6

Lifestyle economics is one of those things that, I mean, it could almost mean anything.
