Summary

This is a gripping personal account of how Labour managed to lose Hartlepool for the first time in the history of the constituency. Paul was Labour's candidate and in this comprehensive analysis, he explains the factors in the defeat, what the public really said to him and Keir Starmer about Labour, how Keir Starmer dealt with the public in Hartlepool and what Labour needs to do if it not only wants to win back a former safe seat, but ever wants to form a government ever again.

Hello and welcome to the political party. Today's guest is Dr Paul Williams, who was the

0:12.8

Labour candidate in the Hartley Paul by election. So as you can imagine, we've got a lot

0:17.4

to talk about. Before I come onto that, firstly, the local elections, the Hollywood Senate

0:24.0

and police and crime commissioner elections have now happened. The results are all out.

0:29.1

Suddenly, I think it's a nightmare that we don't just count the whole on a first ignite.

0:32.7

I realise that's very selfish. I'm sure a lot of you agree. It's sort of trickling out of results

0:37.6

over the weekend. It's still on Sunday, having to watch some of the results come in. It's

0:42.1

intolerable. I want to know what happened now anyway. They just made me think, actually, about

0:47.9

the guests on the show during this kind of election season. So just as a catch-up of some of the guests

0:55.0

I've had on Andy Street, the Tory candidate for Merri the West Midlands, held on. So he's now in his

1:00.9

second term. We had Jackie Bailey on who held her seat, Paddy tipping. My old boss, the former

1:09.7

MP for show, would lost as police and crime commissioner for Nottinghamshire, which I

1:15.4

not took personally in the centre that I thought it was an insane way, but I was just gutted for Paddy

1:20.1

because as you'll know, from listening to that episode, a phenomenal politician and a real loss.

1:25.6

Who else? Annie Weld, I think, came back on the list, had Annalise Dodson, who's just been

1:32.8

reshuffled in the shadow cabinet. Marvin Reese, one as Labour Mayor of Bristol, Sean Bailey,

1:39.7

was not, did not become Mayor of London, but got a better result than the last candidate.

1:45.2

Humsie, Yusif, one, Liam Burn, by definition, if Andy Street, one, then Liam Burn lost.

1:51.3

Adam Price, Clyde, Adam, sort of, okay night. So what I'm trying to say is, on the whole,

1:56.8

coming on this show is good for your electoral prospects, sort of. Maybe there's no link.

2:03.8

The other, there is no link. So I'm not claiming that this podcast could make or indeed

2:09.6

break for the school careers. But I think overall, I mean, a cynical thing to do, which is
