Why are negative stereotypes about aging so destructive?

This is the People's Pharmacy with Terry and Joe Grayden.

Some Dr. Some doctors see older people through a lens of disability and

decrepitude. Does that have an impact on their prescribing patterns and

When people apply a stereotype to you, it can be aggravating.

Has someone assumed you might not understand a complex health problem because of your age or

appearance? Why do certain other countries value older people rather than treat them

as liabilities? Coming up on the People's Pharmacy, how your beliefs about aging determine how long and well you live. In the People's Pharmacy Health Headlines, the Department of Health and Human Services declared

monkey pox a public health emergency in the United States. This week, total cases

reported since the spring reached more than 9,000. But that's almost certainly an

undercount because it's difficult to get tested for this virus. In addition, contact

tracing similar to that done in the early stages of the COVID pandemic could help public health

officials vaccinate known contacts of cases quickly and stop the spread.

However, chronically underfunded public health departments are struggling to do this.

Experts are concerned that the start of a new academic year could allow

for widespread transmission of the virus on college and university campuses. It's spread

by skin to skin or face to face contact.
