Summary

Episode 252: Should Women Wear Head Coverings When They Pray? In 1 Corinthians 11:5–6, the apostle Paul wrote that a woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered “dishonors her head.” Did Paul mean that women should wear a literal, physical head covering when they pray? In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard carefully examines 1 Corinthians 11 and makes the case that a woman’s uncut hair is given to her as her covering. At the same time, Dr. Berna...

Dr. Bernard, I want to ask you a question about 1 Corinthians 11 5 through 6, where Paul wrote,

0:12.1

But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head,

0:17.5

for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved, for if a woman is not covered,

0:22.2

let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

0:28.8

I'm asking you about these verses, because some Christian groups have interpreted this,

0:32.9

these verses to mean that a woman should wear a head covering when she's praying. And since, of course,

0:38.3

Christian women should be ready to pray at all times, essentially then the teaching extends that

0:43.8

they should wear a head covering at all times, regardless of whether or not they're in church.

0:49.1

Is that what Paul meant in 1st Corinthians chapter 11 when he's talking about head coverings?

0:54.5

Let me give you two answers. My first answer, which I personally think, is no, Paul is not

1:00.6

requiring a physical covering in addition to long hair, but in essence, he is speaking of the

1:07.2

long hair itself as a symbolic covering or veil. And I'll, I'll explain why I think that's the

1:13.3

more accurate understanding. However, there are some people, and especially in some other countries

1:19.3

where they have different translations and different customs, it seems more likely to them there's a

1:24.8

physical veil. In that case, what I would argue is this. Paul would

1:29.3

be saying whatever is culturally appropriate for a woman, including for modesty or gender

1:37.7

distinction wearing a physical veil, but the reason for that is because God has given long hair.

1:43.2

So in other words, the alternative

1:45.5

interpretation would be, yes, in your culture, if that's what a woman should wear, I advise

1:52.5

to wear it, because the underlying example that God is given for all cultures of all people

1:58.4

everywhere is the hair. So we end up with the same thing

2:02.5

that long hair would be expected for a woman in God's plan, but a physical veil in
