Summary

Dr. Leighton Flowers continues to play through a recent sermon by Jeff Durbin from Apologia church in which he gives a defense of Calvinistic theology. In this section Jeff actually discourages his congregation from telling people "Jesus Loves You" because that is "never what we hear the apostles doing."

Hello and welcome back to Sochiology 101.

0:13.4

Today we're going to be going back through or continuing to go through Jeff Durbin's message,

0:18.5

defending Calvinism. There's a lot of meat on the bone, like I mentioned

0:22.0

before. It's over an hour-long message giving a defense for Calvinism. So he really walks through

0:26.8

all the major points that are typically hit upon on the whole debate with Calvinists. And so I think

0:33.9

it gives us a good foil for us to kind of engage with some of the arguments that maybe you're familiar with in the Calvinism, Armenianism slash provisionism debate and all the things that go on online.

0:44.5

And so I wanted you to hear how we respond to this.

0:46.9

And this specifically gets into what we talk about with regard to the love of God.

0:51.0

Does God love all people?

0:52.9

Does God genuinely have a salvific love? In other words,

0:56.8

genuinely desire for all to leave their sin and to come under his provision of grace and

1:05.4

mercy through the atoning work of Christ, which was provided for all. Or did Christ only die for the sins of the

1:12.2

elect ones, the ones unilaterally picked before they were ever born, and God only really has a

1:16.9

salvific love for them and all the rest. He salvifically at least has rejected. He does not really

1:22.2

have a genuine salvific love for them. He may have some kind of a common benevolence towards them,

1:27.6

you know, that he'll get into in this broadcast, but does he really have a love for them?

1:33.5

And we're going to talk about that a little bit.

1:35.2

We're going to talk about why I think it's important for us to be able to say indiscriminately,

1:40.3

yes, God loves you, and yes, Jesus Christ died for you.

1:47.5

We as non-Calvinists can say that consistently.

2:03.5

Calvinist, as Jeff will admit here, can't say that. And that's what we are pushing back on because we do believe the Bible does teach indiscriminately that anyone and everyone can put their faith in Christ and thus come under his provision of love.

2:05.7

And so that's what we're going to really be talking about.
