Summary

Today's question comes from Ron, who asks about domain names. Should he buy up all the variations (.net, .com, .org, etc.)? In this episode, I mention Zen Habits (http://zenhabits.net) and LeadPages (http://leadpages.net). Do you have a question about managing domain names? Record it at http://www.askpat.com/.

Now here's today's question from Ron.

Hi, Pat. This is Ron. I'm looking to launch not too long from now, and I'm wondering if it is a good idea to buy up all the variations of your domain name. Dotnet.com, so on and so forth. Thank you, Pat. Love the show.

that wish they had one of the other ones. So if possible,

0:55.6

1:09.4

owned by somebody else, but a lot of people go to zenhabits.com because it's, you know, the dot com is the most common. But with that being said, has it been completely necessary for Leo over at zenhabits.net to have a dot com in order to become successful? No, not at all. There has been a lot of cases that

1:31.1

are like that where they don't have a dot com yet they're completely successful. ProBlogger.

1:36.4

Dot net. Sendhabits.net. Fizzle.com. It's whatever you brand it with, that's what it becomes.

1:43.2

And yes, there will be some people who go to the other ones if you cannot get those, but that's not the end of the world. So if you can, just to save yourself the headache and if you have the funds available, you could likely get the dot com and the dot net and maybe the dot org. Is it wise to buy all variations? Probably not, especially from the beginning.

If you have a successful business, then by all means, you can get as many as you'd like,
