Hello and welcome to the Scriptures or Real podcast. This is the podcast where we talk about

elements of the scriptures that have become real to us because we believe that we can draw

more power out of the scriptures when they are real to us, and we need all the power we can get.

I'm your host, Kerry Mielstein, and today we're doing a shortcast on some of the profound teachings in John, Chapter 5, and 6.

So let me give you a kind of a bullet point list here at the beginning.

What I want to say is that we're going to start

to really focus in on a theme that I believe is the most prevalent and important theme in the

book of John. And by important, I'm assigning it that meaning because John seems to talk about it

more than anything else. So John seems to think it's the most important theme. And yet I'm

surprised at how often it doesn't get a lot of airtime. And as I hear other people teach and talk about John, that this doesn't seem to get the attention that I think John is giving it. So and I think it's incredibly important. And we're going to start to highlight it today. And then you'll see us coming back to it again and again and again. I'm sure I'm going to do a number of shortcasts. Sometimes I'll just do a quick shortcast that we'll say, look at this theme again here and

explore it. So we're going to talk about that theme, the theme of the relationship of the father and the

son. With that, we're going to also talk about the bread of life sermon, the Savior's response

to his accusers when he heals the man at the

pull of Bethesda and what all of this has to do with us. So let's jump in and talk about this.

I will say that we're going to start in John 5, and I'm not going to do the story of the man who's

healed at the pool of Bethesda because I'm doing

that in a separate podcast with a former student of mine. And I'm really pleased. I've already

recorded that. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. She really got me thinking and about some

ways that that applies to me. And I think to everyone

in ways they haven't thought of. And I shared some stories that I really felt would be

very meaningful for a number of people. And it ended up being an episode that I enjoyed a lot.

So we'll talk about, we are not going to talk about that one here, but I do want to talk about the response that happens afterwards. So you'll notice at the end of that story when he is made whole and he picks up his bed and walks, it just says at the end we're in John chapter 5 verse 9. It just kind of throws in and the same day was the Sabbath day.
