A common story among home brewers is that after growing up with parents who drink primarily

Bud, Miller, and Coors, they pined for something with a bit more character and discovered a

hobby that would afford them the opportunity to try various

unique styles. While preferences certainly vary, brewers interested in the history of beer

often develop a passion for traditional European styles with one notable region being the

United Kingdom, which has had an indelible influence on modern American styles. This is the

Brewlosophy podcast. I'm your your host Marshall Shot. And joining me on

this episode to discuss the delicious classic British style known as Best Bitter is contributor Martin

Kean. Well, I grew up with a parent who only drank Best Bitter and has probably never heard

of Bud Miller or cause. So coming at this from a different perspective,

but look,

0:54.9

this is one of my absolute favorite styles.

0:58.1

So super excited to talk about it today.

1:00.3

Yeah,

1:00.6

I believe the Bud Miller course of England

would be Carlsberg or something, right?

1:06.4

Oh, goodness.

1:07.7

Yes, that is right up.

1:09.5

No.

1:10.9

Yeah, there's a lot of really bad, cheap, goodness, yes. That is right up. No. Yeah, there's a lot of really bad, cheap lagers in England, even back, you know, in the 70s and so forth.

1:21.3

So, yeah, I'm not saying that the beers you mentioned were bad lagers, of course, though, Marshall. I know that I would be kicked off the show if I said that about a particular brand. Hey, man, preference is subjective. We talk about that all the time. But one thing I do know is that British beers are not for everyone, but like you, Martin, I absolutely love them. So much, in fact, that I've brewed all of the traditional British styles in the BJCP many times over the years. And one of my favorites easily is best bitter. And that's for many reasons which we'll get into later. Now I'm looking forward to chatting with you about this tasty beer style as well as going over what tasters thought of a version that you brewed up using short and shoddy methods. All right.
