Summary

Spartan Pro Team member Nicole Mericle came into OCR from a running and bouldering background and was able to make an almost immediate impact. She is widely considered the best female OCR “short course” athlete in the world, winning multiple championships.

One can become a great obstacle racer even when obstacles aren’t your initial strong suit.
Indoor climbing gyms are phenomenal for obstacle race training.
With climbing, just get started. Learn the basic holds and moves.
Repetition is your best friend.

Can we talk a little bit about how that's helped you in the obstacle racing?

Yeah, I came into obstacle course racing from a background with running and climbing and no obstacle specific training.

And I would say that I was able to come in and like make an immediate impact in the sport.

I definitely had some some slip-ups here and there in the definitely the first two years

of racing but in general I came in pretty well prepared and I think that's

mainly due to my my climbing background.

What are your tips for new folks who want to work on that grip strength in the old

climbing gym? I think that the best thing to do is to at first just go and climb and kind of get used to

how your body moves on the wall and different types of holds

definitely when you're first starting out climbing you don't need to go on to like the

campus board or the hang board or anything like that but just climbing will be

really beneficial. How much running versus bouldering or other physical fitness do you do?

I would say I run five days a week about 40 miles a week and I'm in the

climbing gym probably four times a week and that could be about two hours
