Summary

When Emily was ten, something began dancing beside her.

The hardwood floors answered her steps. The CD display flickered only for certain songs. At night, small objects shifted gently in the kitchen as if someone unseen moved through the house in rhythm with her. She assumed it was a little girl. Years later, she learned it wasn’t.

One night, she saw a young woman stretched across the family sofa in bright orange tights — calm, composed, watching. The illusion of something childlike disappeared instantly.

And years after that, in a different home, the presence returned with urgency. A cushion trembled at the edge of her bed as a voice whispered the same words over and over: “Get out.”

At the time, it felt frightening. Later, she realized it may have been the only warning she ever received.

When Emily was 10 years old, her family moved into a modest house built sometime in the 1940s.

It wasn't grand grand and it wasn't

particularly charming. The wood floors creaked in winter. The kitchen cabinet stuck when

humidity rolled in and the plumbing occasionally complained at night. There was nothing overtly

unsettling about it. If someone had asked whether the house felt haunted, she would have said

0:39.1

no. The first thing she noticed was not fear. It was rhythm. Emily had always lived inside music.

She sang while brushing her teeth, hummed in the car, and turned the living room into a stage

It was oxygen.

Within the first few months of living there, she began to feel something strange while

dancing.

One afternoon, as she spun across the hardwood floor to a pop song she had nearly

memorized,

she felt the unmistakable sensation of being watched. It wasn't a passing thought. It was

1:18.2

physical, immediate, like someone standing close enough to share her air. She slowed, glanced toward

the hallway, expecting to see her mother observing her performance.

1:28.8

The hallway was empty.

She shrugged and began dancing again, but this time she paid attention to the floor beneath her feet.

When she shifted her weight, she felt a subtle vibration respond.
