layout, the way the kitchen opened into the living room, the color of the carpet,

the sound, the screen door made when it slammed, and then there are houses you remember because

of how they felt. She grew up in the second kind. It sat at the edge of a small southern town

where the land flattened and the air always felt a little too heavy, especially in summer.

The yard was large enough to run in,

old enough that the trees leaned at slight angles, as if they'd been growing without supervision

for decades. Nothing about it looked ominous. It wasn't abandoned or decaying. It wasn't the sort of

place local kids dared each other to approach, but from her earliest

memory, there was something about stepping inside that made her body change. She didn't know why.

As a child, you rarely do. You don't analyze instinct. You just react to it. The hallway that led

to the bedrooms was narrow and slightly darker than the rest

of the house even during the day. It wasn't dramatically dim, just shadowed in a way that made the air

feel thicker. She never walked down that hallway. She ran every single time. She would reach the

entrance to it, feel her stomach tighten as if she'd missed a step

and sprint to her bedroom door, heart racing, for no reason she could name. The strange thing was

that once she reached her room and shut the door, the fear vanished, not slowly, instantly,

as if she had crossed an invisible boundary and whatever lingered in the hallway was content to remain there.

She never told her parents. Children adapt quietly. If something unsettles you long enough, it simply becomes part of the routine.

She assumed everyone felt that way about the hallway and that she was just less brave about it.
