The house sat on a quiet stretch of road in northwestern Pennsylvania, not far from Lake Erie.

It was old, older than most of the

neighboring homes, and had been standing since the mid-1800s. Time had softened its edges, but it still

carried a sense of permanence, as if it had watched generations come and go without ever fully

letting them go.

She grew up there.

As far back as she could remember, the dark frightened her.

Not in the way children feared monsters under the bed, but in a way that felt deliberate, specific.

Certain rooms felt worse than others.

Certain corners demanded her attention even when she tried not to look at them. Walking through the house at night without turning on a light felt impossible, even as an adult.

When she was young, her mother dismissed it as a normal childhood fear.

She accepted that explanation at first.

It was easier than questioning why her chest tightened the moment the lights went out,

or why she felt as though something unseen shifted when she entered certain spaces.

Her bedroom was upstairs, though it hadn't always been a bedroom.

The house had once been divided into two apartments,

and her room had originally been the upstairs kitchen.

A short hallway from the stairs opened directly into it, with no door to separate the space.

From there, one could reach her parents' room, her sister's room, and the bathroom.
