Summary

Decision-making is primarily about discernment. It's the ability to make decisions that align with God's will for your life and ministry.

The truth is - discernment is an art. It takes practice, attention, and a lifetime to develop.

But if there is one core practice that is the foundation of discernment, it is learning to pay attention to the movement of God in your own soul through consolations and desolations.

"Consolations and desolations" are terms offered by Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits over 500 years ago to describe the inner feelings that move you toward God and the ones that take you away from God.

Leaders who are able to slow down and pay attention to the inner work of God will not only be effective, they will be able to lead from joy, rest, and freedom.

the voice of God.

And so we talked about last week, how, or two weeks ago, that it's incredible that you

0:32.5

have been given sealed orders, just like I have, in words, orders from God for your purpose here on earth. You've been given power, authority, gifts, orders, just like I have. In other words, orders from God for your purpose here on

earth. You've been given power, authority, gifts, time, energy, experience, a calling. And like Jesus,

0:45.0

you have a deep destiny. And so in part one, I sought to lay a foundation from the life of Jesus

0:51.1

about how we all experience temptations and testings from the evil one,

0:56.5

to seduce us to get off track in the decisions that we make.

1:00.5

It comes to all of us, but God's sovereign over all of that,

1:03.8

and there are boundaries to the exercise of our God-given power,

1:08.6

and that's the work of discernment. And so as with Jesus, we are

1:13.0

tested. We see that in the tradition of the Hebrews that we're proven by testing. We see in Abraham,

1:19.6

how God tested him, in Exodus 16, with God testing the Israelites, and even Job. And it's meant

1:25.0

to discipline us, to mature us, to humble us, so that God can

1:28.3

bestow on us further revelation for the long term. But there is a reality of a warfare that

1:34.9

goes on around us and an evil one who seeks to get us to twist what Jesus has for us and

1:41.0

to get us to ignore the boundaries of our relationship with God.

1:46.0

So again, this is all about a relationship that you have and I have with the Lord God of the universe.

1:52.0

We're sons and daughters and we follow Jesus wherever he goes and wherever he wants to take us.

1:58.0

And so our work is one of listening. That's our life work. We listen
