When I was a kid, I used to think that pork chops and karate chops were the same thing.

I thought they were both pork chops.

That was just a few seconds of a poem called, To This Day, read by the author Shane Coyzan.

As the poem goes on, Shane tells the story of the trouble that ensues when he tells a counselor at school that his grandma gives him karate chops.

That leads to a new nickname at school, pork chop, and a kind of feeding frenzy of bullying.

Shane tells the stories in the poem of other kids who got bullied and the long-term damage

that the bullying caused. Bullying is a personal safety issue. It can be an educational issue and

a legal issue, and it's absolutely a mental health issue.

If you were put in mortal fear, if you were physically attacked over and over, how could

it not be a mental health issue? Of course it is. And if you suffer this in silence out of fear

of retribution or because adults didn't or wouldn't take it seriously, how could that not be a mental health issue?

It's a huge, huge career-defining hit.

Because as with a lot of mental health issues, people were starving for someone to come out and talk openly about bullying.
